Auschwitz today: Róża Krzywobłocka-Laurów

von: Bombay Flying Club

Photographer Martin Blume has been working on the site of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp for more than four years. During this time he has encountered numerous survivors. In talking to them, he uses his photographs to trigger their memories. In this exploration of the power of images, he speaks to Róża Krzywobłocka-Laurów while showing her his work.

Inhalt

Róża Krzywobłocka-Laurów (born 30 September 1935 in Warsaw) was deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in August 1944 together with her sister Bożena, her mother and her grandmother. Her father had been drafted to the war. During the Warsaw Uprising the family were expelled from their home in Warsaw by the Germans. After several days in an open-air prison on Zieleniak Market Square, they were transported to Auschwitz via the transit camp Pruszków. Initially the two sisters lived with their mother in the same barrack, but they were later separated from her and relocated to the children’s quarter. Shortly before the liberation of the camp, the three women were transported to the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp near Berlin. After the liberation they returned to a war-devastated Warsaw.
