The U.S. Consulate General Düsseldorf, the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, and the North American Studies Program invited the interested public to a discussion event with Washington insider Dr. Kori Schake, Hoover Institution. The discussion titled “The Future of the Transatlantic Foreign and Security Partnership: Will the Trump-Administration Abandon the World Order?” took place on Thursday, June 22, 2017, from 6 to 8 pm.

Inhalt

After the recent NATO summit in Brussels questions remain about the future commitment of the United States to the security alliance. President Trump did not explicitly endorse article 5, the mutual defense pledge which is the heart of the alliance, calling into question an important alliance that has kept the peace for 70 years. And Chancellor Merkel concluded after the summit that the United States of President Trump is not the reliable partner her country and the continent have automatically depended on in the past. While the U.S. changed its course and reduced its overseas involvement already under the Obama administration, President Donald Trump is steering U.S. foreign policy even further in this direction. Is he really calling into question the crucial role of the United States as the defender of the liberal inter-national order? Is there a power struggle going on inside the White House between nationalists and internationalists? Who will succeed? What does this mean in regard of foreign/security policy issues towards Russia, Ukraine, the Asia-Pacific region, and the joint fight against the international terrorism. And last but not least how should Germany and Europe react?
