histoCON 2020
75 years after WWII: Peace under Construction?

Important announcement concerning Corona Virus: histoCON 2020 cancelled

We are very sad to announce that histoCON has to be cancelled due to the current situation concerning the corona virus. As stated in our FAQs on our website, we have reassessed the situation on a daily basis. Based on the current recommendations by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Robert Koch Institute, we had to make this decision after intense discussions on the last days in our team. This decision was not easy to make – but first and foremost, everyone’s health and well-being is more important than the ambition to make histoCON happen as planned in May 2020. We hope that our decision will meet with understanding. We want to thank all those who worked so intensively and beneficially and wanted to contribute to the success of histoCON. We highly appreciate your work and effort!

We are currently considering different options to achieve the goal of histoCON, which is to bring together young people from all over the world, sharing their thoughts and to look back and to think ahead. Please understand that this will take time. We will publish all updates concerning histoCON on this page and on histoCON.de.

The Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) will organize the histoCON 2020 -75 years after WWII: Peace under Construction? from 6 to 9 May 2020 in Berlin to commemorate the end of the war on the 8th of May. The motto will be Look back, think ahead. The aim is to discuss narratives about the Second World War, its continuing effects and lessons that can be drawn from its history. The explicit intention is not only to commemorate the Second World War but also to consider the implications for the present and future.

We want to invite 500 young people aged between 18 and 35 from around the world to learn and discuss new perspectives during two linked events aimed at two different target groups at one location and common programme parts.

The histoCON Laboratory event is aimed at the target group of newcomers: 250 young people between the ages of 18 and 25 who, apart from their schooling, have had little or no contact with the occasion so far. The aim of the histoCON Laboratory is to reflect on the significance of war and peace in the past and present. The histoCON Campus event is aimed at the target group of Young Professionals: 250 young people between the ages of 25 and 35 who are experienced actors with previous knowledge in the field of historical education. Here, the 75th anniversary of the end of the war will provide an opportunity to reflect on its significance for contemporary historical images and receptions, for historical learning and cultural projects.
